The Madison city clerk’s office has already put out a call for extra poll workers, predicting a turnout similar in numbers to fall elections, which usually draw double or nearly double the number of voters that spring elections do.
If that happens, it would mean something on the order of 40,000 to 50,000 additional votes, a number dwarfing the 1,200 votes that separated Soglin, who finished first in February’s primary, from Cieslewicz. Figuring out who those additional voters will break for is the key to predicting the race, but it’s far from clear at this point.
