v2 Vos 2005 vs 2011 - no girlfriend(?) now leader Joint Finance

2013 ... and now he is in charge of Assembly ?

_____________
Vos may not be as lonely today as he was in 2005 but he sure has the power to make other people unhappy - From ThinkProgress -

10,000 Wisconsin Residents Have Lost Unemployment Benefits Because Republicans Sat On Their Hands

Wisconsin may soon become the latest state to turn down federal funding to extend unemployment benefits. While extended unemployment benefits ran out April 16 for 10,000 Wisconsinites, Wisconsin Republicans have been delaying a decision to accept additional federal funding for months, claiming that extending benefits create a disincentive to find work.
Many, such as co-chairman of the Joint Finance Committee Robin Vos (R), argue there are jobs out there, but people are unwilling to take them, preferring to sit on the cushion of unemployment benefits rather than take a pay cut from what they were making before the recession. But Vos’ statements contradict multiple reports. ...

Spkr. Robin Vos - is this true??? Match.com no more?

Everything you wanted to know about Robin Vos but were afraid to ask

We told you Monday about Robin Vos, the Republican state rep from Burlington who was so modest he told everything about his personal tastes on a dating website but didn't reveal he was a legislator, saying he was "self-employed." Earlier post: "Sensitive legislator wants to meet skinny-dipping flirt with money, power."

Soon after that post went up, Vos' page mysteriously became unavailable on the Match.com website.
from the the Xoff Files ... click title to see the story ... only he was self-employed ;-} ... please note this is from 2005 ...

JFC Co-chair Robin Vos - plans to finish its work on - budget by 6/4.

Alarm Bells!  This change(?) in JFC schedule is alarming - meaning anticipate and act now not later!

Wispolitics.com reports ... JFC Co-chair Robin Vos says the committee plans to finish its work on the budget by June 4 (which is a Saturday).  Remember Fitzgerald said "Collective Bargaining" might go back into budget if not decided on by the Courts (before June).  Supreme Court set (I think June 6th) for the day they would consider arguments about Judge Sumi's stop order - not that they would decide anything except whether to proceed on the question!  JFC (Darling/Vos) have nothing in the Calendar beyond the end of May ( the link is in the title, click).

I recall hearing Vos say at a past hearing that this process (JFC) would probably go into late June (and it usually does - if not longer).

Contacting - Legislature's Joint Committee on Finance - easily?

The Joint Committee on Finance can be found via website by clicking above.  This may or may not be what you really want to do!  What if you want to send all the Committee members an email?  What if you want to see if your representative is on the Committee, check out their Home Page or send them an individual email?  What if geographically speaking you have not memorized District Numbers?  Hopefully this page will expedite your task, refresh your geographic memory and allow you to do a single or several emails without a lot of difficulty!  Just click on the "Jump Link" below and the information alluded to will appear as part of this blog (as it will in other relevant blog entries - assuming the link is ready for that committee).

The members understandably want to know if you are in their district - even though they take contributions from lobbyists and corporations that do not live in the district either.  Do not let that slow you down since you can make political contributions to any politician (or opponent) and talk to your friends and family who live in the district (if you do not) about what their representative is doing in Madison and how if affects all of us.  You might want to copy your friends the email you are sending their representative - whether you use direct, cc or bcc is also your choice!  If you have questions about how to cut and paste, open email and you are reading this then you are only a few steps away from showing your representatives - "What democracy looks like!"  Ask your friends for a little help!!

Few Heard at WI Budget "Hearing" in Milwaukee, but School Choice Advocate Denounces Walker's Subsidy for Rich

Click on Title

From the source PRWatch ...

At Monday’s public hearing in Milwaukee on Governor Walker’s budget, Wisconsin Republicans once again resorted to anti-participatory tactics to avoid criticism of their far-right agenda. Despite these efforts, strong criticisms were squeezed-in by longtime Milwaukee school choice advocate Howard Fuller, calling GOP efforts to lift income limits on school vouchers an “outrageous” program “that subsidizes rich people.”
"I never got into this to give someone like me $6,500 to send their kid to Marquette High School (tuition $15,000 per year). . . This is where I get off the train, I'm not going to go anywhere in America and fight for a program that subsidizes rich people."

Recall Effort Attracts More Than Union Workers

Suburban mom says it's wrong to place the burden of state fiscal repair on the middle class.

Chris Marshall acknowledges she is in a tax bracket that should make her a rock-solid Republican and a supporter of state Sen. Alberta Darling. ...
... Marshall accused Darling of making misleading statements when she said that the recall effort had hired college students to circulate petitions.
“I ran into her in the parking lot of TJ Maxx the other day,” Marshall said. “I told her that she wasn’t telling the truth about that. I challenged her to name one paid canvasser. She couldn’t do it. I told her to look at me – I am working on the recall. None of us are being paid.”

Press all cover one story and poorly cover the JFC hearings! That's Show Biz!! 4/8 Upd Forward

Yesterday we were setup to believe that there would be a big turnout at Stevens Pt. when the JFC convened its budget hearings.

http://wi1848forward.blogspot.com/2011/04/thousands-expected-at-stevens-point.html

Today we are told that few showed up.

Few attend budget hearing in Stevens Point

The hearings were available on WisEye.org and could be listened/seen remotely.  Either they or I had technical difficulties from time to time but I think I had at least 3 to 4 hours of listening time and viewing time limited by the video camera shot.  I am disappointed with the reporting in general, both the unattributed hype about turnout and the very limited coverage of content even in a summarized form.

My impression is that there seemed to be about 100 to 200 people most of the time in the space.  The most annoying thing was the "2 minute warning" timer constantly ringing out.  I suppose that the legislators were afraid to silently keep time and then politely interrupt the speaker - I would encourage them to be brave next time.  Another impression is that a good number of speakers had prepared materials and exhibits to provide the JFC - but the JFC initially only seemed to have an ad hoc process for collecting them.  I would like to see a list of exhibits and speakers if possible - is it available somewhere, public record, open meetings request?

There certainly seemed to be a partisan divide about people sticking to just 2 minutes ... one side - we have to keep to it or not everyone will be heard... if there were so few how about some flexibility - fairness?  There were constant reminders that people should stop clapping their approval of speakers - it would lengthen the process too much.

If people only have two minutes they have to be extremely focused on a limited issue - not that they do not have a lot of issues.  I suspect that is why the number of exhibits were prepared by speakers.  People knew they were going to have to say just a little bit about big issues.  Optimistically they wanted it in the JFC record.

My summary would be that I did not hear people supporting this budget.  Perhaps one would not expect it in such a context - although in Madison there were a whole group of people who supported the Budget Repair Bill (how and where they came from remains a source of contention).

I heard a few people talking about raising taxes (especially on beer).  I heard people saying they should (JFC, Legislature, Governor) start over on the budget.  I heard people express that their communities, schools and libaries were being severely constrained by this budget (perhaps meaning the Budget Repair Bill).  I heard young and old say the UW System should remain intact.  I heard a lot of testimony on the human costs of this budget and how it is going to create more problems and not really save any dollars.

How many people did provide testimony?

Multiple choice: less than 25, 26-50, 51-100, more than 100?

3/31/11 - #JFC - Dan #Clancy - #WTCS President - Small World

Click on the link to see the WisPolitics.com  ... from that source JFC wraps up
... 1st two paragraphs ...
The JFC has concluded its questioning of Wisconsin Technical College System President Dan Clancy, and the committee has adjourned. The committee will be back on Monday at 10 a.m. to hear from the DATCP, DNR, and the Department of Transportation.

Before ending, Rep. Tamara Grigsby, D-Milwaukee, told Clancy she's hearing from tech school officials in her home area that the changes in employee compensation mandated in Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill don't make up for the amount of state aid cuts.

Small World:  I believe this is the "Dan Clancy" who worked at the Legislative Fiscal Bureau back in the 1980s - he came sooner and stayed longer than I did!

3/31 : Outside signs - Inside - JFC Day 3 - Tony Evers - Dept Public Instruction Testimony

The JFC is now into its Third Day.  UW-Madison and UW-System concluded ... listened for couple of hours -- back and forth on the "split" and flexibility!

2pm - It's a nice day in Madison ... there are a block and one-half on Ian's Pizza box lids protest signs and a good deal more people along the sidewalk ... but not large.

Earlier - News is that DOA will stop implementation of AB 10 (budget repair) - per Judge Sumi's order. Vos and Darling left the JFC about 1pm to go to Governor's Office - something just came up  ... Darlings words ... bet when I get back to Twitter there will have been a "Press Conference"!

JFC now ondeck: Superintendent Evers (elected) among many things has just pointed out that the Governor's budget singled out to cut one "environmental instructional" position in DPI -- curious?  Finished - questions now - Vos first.  Will be listening but not commenting!

Upd:   Seems a little contentious with Republican Legislators ... the Democrats (esp. Milwaukee) are interested about impacts on their areas.  Darling (R) encourages Evers to work with the Governor.  Earlier Evers explained why the "out-of-state" study done of schools is probably flawed.
