Madsion.com - Unemployment benefits at risk under GOP move 7/26 still in limbo

Do you know one of these 40,000 people?  Do you think they do not have a job because they are too lazy to look for a job?  Do you think they will thank a Republican if they manage to keep their home or avoid bankruptcy?  Do you think they have health insurance?

Unemployment benefits at risk under GOP move

... The extension, which amounts to $88 million in federal benefits, was estimated to help up to 40,000 out-of-work residents. Passing it was recommended by a state council that oversees jobless benefits. ...

NPR: What The 'New Normal' Means For Americans

From the NPR story ...to listen click title ...

...
And the heart of the problem is job creation. Crescenzi and his colleagues argue that the U.S. economy could actually grow 2 percent a year without adding any new jobs. That's because the productivity of current workers is rising at about 2 percent a year.
"In other words a company can produce 2 percent more goods and/or services a year even if it doesn't increase the number of people it employs," he says. ...

10,000 Wisconsin Residents Have Lost Unemployment Benefits Because Republicans Sat On Their Hands

Wisconsin may soon become the latest state to turn down federal funding to extend unemployment benefits. While extended unemployment benefits ran out April 16 for 10,000 Wisconsinites, Wisconsin Republicans have been delaying a decision to accept additional federal funding for months, claiming that extending benefits create a disincentive to find work.
Many, such as co-chairman of the Joint Finance Committee Robin Vos (R), argue there are jobs out there, but people are unwilling to take them, preferring to sit on the cushion of unemployment benefits rather than take a pay cut from what they were making before the recession. But Vos’ statements contradict multiple reports. ...

Robin Vos - is this true??? Match.com no more?

WiDNR- WiJobs -NPR - Wanted: Foreign Workers For Germany's Job Boom

What does this tell you?  My narrative is that Germany with its heavy export economy may be filling in for crippled production from Japan and the downsizing forced on U.S. automakers.  It also foretells future recovery in the U.S. and more job growth.  Back here in Wisconsin anyone who says "we're broke" should be tossed out of office.

Even though we will get 250,000 jobs soon enough in Wisconsin it won't be due to Governor Walker's policies!  His narrative is that his "open for business" policies would create 250,000 jobs during his term.  Doyle's DOR estimates (prior to Walker) were something like 200,000 over Walker's term.  So do be skeptical of the spin!

On the Walker/Wisconsin theme see this early blog entry!  "Mainstream" media journalist's repeating Walker's mantra like it was some bold risk on his part has been very disappointing.  CapTimes finally wrote an editorial the other day challenging Walker - maybe they said it earlier - I did not see it!

250,000: When an employment promise is NOT a promise!

Now it will be used to justify privatizing DNR and wreaking havoc on the environment!  Will the real journalists please not behave like lemmings and do more than shallow deadline making reporting - I know it's tough but someone has to do it!

Do you remember 7/9/ #2010 ... 9.5% #UnEmployment ... Deficits the story!

Perspective from Need to Know - do you remember July 9th, 2011 and what the debate was?

From the source -

The battle over unemployment

As we simmer along with an unemployment rate of 9.5 percent — a number that would be higher if so many people hadn’t simply given up looking for work — the proposed solutions seem contradictory: Spend more to stimulate the economy; cut spending to reduce the deficit. Smart people on either side of that argument will tell you why they’re right. But left in the middle are hundreds of Americans whose unemployment benefits have run out, with no relief in sight from a Congress that refused to extend these benefits before going on recess.

NPR - Job Number Drop Signals Some Recovery by Scott Horsley 4/2/2011

Is it Scott Walker or President Obama or policies put in place at the end of the Bush Administration and improved on by the Obama Administration.  At least, neither Walker nor Obama are responsible for what Wall Street caused!

WI - Fewer employed but 10,100 more jobs in January than December???

This one has me puzzled - good news and bad news  ... in looking at the data in the report I kept adding and subtracting columns trying to figure out where the numbers come from -  the bad news was pretty clear but where does the 10,100 private sector jobs come from?  Honestly I made an effort to figure it out but it kind of reminded me of the math problems for which the answer in the back of the book just did not seem to agree with what I kept coming up with!

I will just assume I am wrong but if someone can answer where the 10,100 number came from I would appreciate the clarification - some other source??  I will update this note with the answer and next time be that much better at reading tables, etc.  Perhaps not "fewer employed" but "higher unemployment rates" would be more "correct" language on my part?

Thanks in advance

Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Manny Perez says in a report released March 16th, 2011:   (Click the title above to see the report)
“Wisconsin added 10,100 private sector jobs in January, giving us a head start on the hiring season,” Secretary Perez said. “We expect more job growth with Wisconsin’s new, business friendly image under Governor Walker. The time is right for the unemployed to redouble job search efforts and help meet employer needs, particularly manufacturers with increasing production orders.”
Later in the same report (about unemployment rates):
All 72 counties had higher rates in January than in December, but lower rates than in January 2010.
