Trump proposes 20% tax on Mexican imports to pay for "his wall".

If this actually gets done a lot of pain will be experienced in the U.S. - cars, other goods and especially "food/produce" will cost a lot more.

We cannot let the GOP define the language of this "fiscal cliff" debate.  The debate is about jobs and economic recovery and a safety net for all of us when the 1% screw things up and try to make us pay for their mistakes.  Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, et al,  just want to protect the 1%.  The people who raid pension funds (like Romney and BAIN Capital) do not care about other peoples jobs.  There are dozen of ways to protect and enhance Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and create jobs.

One could remove the upper income limit on SS (FICA) withholding.  Oh! You didn't know FICA was capped for some aspects.

One could could treat all income the same no matter the source (i.e., treat capital gains like wages, already done to IRAs, 401Ks for the not so wealthy).

One could make FICA withholding progressive, ability to pay.  Those with really very little discretionary (meaning you can barely get along) income pay less.

President Obama is promoting efficiency in our healthcare system.  We all pay too much for pharmaceuticals.  Why does the GOP block Veterans Administration style purchasing power.  These industries/businesses are subsidized by Federal research projects (National Institute of Health) and then make huge markups on drugs they never could have discovered if it were not for projects like the "Human Genome".

One could cut military interventions and subsidies to out-sourcing quasi-military contractors.

World SafetyNet - Make It Bigger Not Smaller - NPR

More than 1 billion people in the world are living with some sort of disability, according to a new international survey. That's about 15 percent of the world's population, or nearly one of every 7 people.

The above is from the story by NPR which makes you wonder about Wisconsin and what Governor Scott Walker wants to do to Medicaid recipients in our state.  WWJD.

The report includes a foreword by theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who can't feed himself or get dressed or speak without assistance because of his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a debilitating and usually fatal disease. He says there's a moral duty to help disabled people.

Growth in the food stamp program appeared to reach a plateau in February — with 14.3% of the population relying on the safety net program.

The number of food stamp recipients was essentially flat in February, the most recent month available, with 44.2 million Americans receiving benefits, according a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Get an education look at these links ... a two person family (my guess) in Wisconsin spends $6500 each in a healthy year (with pretty good coverage plus expenses) ... sort of confirms the National Geographic graphic ... so beware of your cost and if Walker or Ryan get the changes they are looking for ... ask if your life is more or less complicated or your health care costs you more or less

More thoughts - do any of the countries depicted have a Paul Ryan Health Care System?  Except for Mexico and the United States they all seem to have Universal Health Care.  We spend roughly $2900/yr more to die two (2) years younger than the Swiss.  As I recall the Swiss use private insurance but manage (regulate it) very uniquely?

Let's see - Paul Ryan, Congressman from Wisconsin, wants to transform Medicaid into a block grant (to states) and transform Medicare into some sort of (fixed) payment to private insurers.  And you, Joe Public, will have to spend hours if not weeks figuring out what is best for you just like you now do for Medicare - Part D.  The "D(irty trick)" stands for the famous donut ("black") hole created by a previous Republican dominated Congress.

Just a little time back Governor Walker said he wanted more flexibility  with Medicaid, like block grants would be nice.  Do you think it is the Wisconsin version of "Group Think?"  More likely it is the way ALEC thinks (American Legislative Exchange Council) now famous for Governor Walker's Budget Repair ideas to destroy "collective bargaining".  Wisconsin State Senator Scott Fitzgerald has been a member of ALEC for most of his political career.

ALEC drafted and distributed model legislation in the form of a resolution, that would effectively make both a federally-created health insurance exchange and a public health insurance option illegal under the 10th Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees certain non-specific rights to the states. Joan Gardner, a senior executive at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, (BCBS' lobbying group) admitted playing a key role in crafting the resolution. Christie Herrera, who directs a health task force at ALEC, reports that insurance industry lobbyists have been working with ALEC to promote it to legislators. The resolution, and amendments closely related to it, have already been introduced in at least half a dozen states. ALEC has been working behind the scenes for months to advance the idea that proposals put forth by President Obama and the Democrats to regulate the insurance industry and enact a public option, violate states' rights.^[31][32]

Given the constituency of Medicaid, 50% children, Ryan might be able to pull it off, especially in Wisconsin, since the Governor and Republican controlled legislature has made it more difficult for people to vote - especially (grand parents) older people and kids transitioning to voting age!

It is just so ironic, at the same time Governor Walker wants "block grants" or similar tools from the Federal Government (they pay 60% of the cost?) for managing Medicaid. The tools he has given towns, villages, cities, counties and schools has sent what seems like to many of them to be the undertaker.

He wants flexibility for the state and the ability to decide who and who does not get Medicaid services!  He does not find it "ideologically convenient" to allow locals to solve their problems at the same time he runs Wisconsin's Revenue Sharing over the cliff!

11/11/11 #Medicaid: Death by a 1K Cuts or 10K or More - Making It Personal

11/11/11 ... since March I have met Steven Salmon (last June) and today it seems appropriate to bring this story a little more up to date as the Walker Administration moves to make Wisconsin into a less caring place. Watch the video and understand the implications.  Only 65,000 cuts ... a few more than I thought last March!

I originally posted this on 3/7. I added the links and re-posted it today (4/16/2011) after reading the WSJ article by Steven Salmon!  Call it my example of "Six Degrees of Separation" on the human web!  I have not met Steven but I do know Ms. Bell and the Clarion.

Forgive me, but I prefer this all be subject to public scrutiny and discussion. Do you really want all this decision making concentrated in the hands of one politician and his political appointees in a department decimated by retirements and layoffs?
