Mother Jones spotlights his 1994 Senate campaign, when he actually claimed that single mothers are destroying America.
What went through my mind was the vanity of a remark like that. If there are Single Mothers destroying "America" then there must be a lot of Single Fathers helping to destroy "America". The mothers are taking responsibility; the fathers may or may not be taking responsibility. Santorum may have been trying to address what he sees as a problem ... unfortunately it seems rather prejudicial.
During his first US Senate campaign, Rick Santorum warned voters of a growing menace that was “breeding more criminals” and threatened to destroy America from within: single mothers.
In today's political climate we seem to have many candidates who are blaming women for having children or becoming pregnant, who want to deny contraception to women and the choices they wish to make, who want to deny other screening programs (STDs, pap smears, breast exams) that will save their lives.
These candidates seem to want these women's children to become wards of the state, raised in foster homes or juvenile detention centers or on the streets. Beyond that they want to remove school lunch programs and food stamps and other social safety net programs so that these same kids cannot focus on learning or develop their minds due to poor nutrition.
