ReadingLists/PodCasts/Video: C-SPAN - The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy - 7/20/2020

Katherine Gehl, co-author of The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy

... SO, AS YOU JUST NOTED, OUR BOOK IS CALLED "THE POLITICS INDUSTRY," AND WE LOOK AT POLITICS, NOT GOVERNMENT, BUT POLITICS, THE COMPETITION BETWEEN POLITICIANS, AND ALL OF THE SURROUNDING ACTORS, AS AN INDUSTRY, NOT BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN LOOK AT IT, BUT BECAUSE IT'S SUPER HELPFUL TO LOOK AT IT THIS WAY, WHICH IS TO SAY WE, AS AMERICANS, ARE VERY USED TO BEING CONSUMERS. WE'RE USED TO BEING CUSTOMERS. BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE USED TO THINKING ABOUT HOW TO GROW THEIR COMPANIES AND GET MORE REVENUE AND MORE GROWTH FOR THEIR COMPANIES, ETC. SO, WHEN WE LOOK AT POLITICS AS AN INDUSTRY, IT HELPS US, EITHER AS CUSTOMERS OR AS BUSINESS LEADERS, TO BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND WHY IT'S SO DYSFUNCTIONAL. I'LL JUST GIVE A HINT AT IT. WHAT WE LOOK AT THE INTEREST, THE PUBLIC INTEREST, THE CITIZEN, IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT CUSTOMER. AND POLITICS IS NOT BROKEN. IT'S ACTUALLY WORKING EXACTLY HOW IT'S DESIGNED TO WORK. BUT IN THE POLITICS INDUSTRY, WHEN WE LOOK UNDERNEATH THE HOOD, THE POLITICS INDUSTRY HAS NOT BEEN DESIGNED TO PUT THE PUBLIC INTEREST AND SELLING PROBLEMS FOR CITIZENS. IT'S BEEN DESIGNED TO PUT THE INTERESTS IN THE POLITICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX, WHICH IS WHAT WE CALL THESE POLITICIANS AND THE LOBBYISTS AND THE CAMPAIGN CONSULTANTS IN THE MEDIA, EVERYBODY INVOLVED IN THE BUSINESS OF POLITICS, WE CALL IT THE POLITICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. THE HISTORY HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO PUT THEM FIRST. AND WHAT WE SEE IS, THAT'S WORKING. IT'S WORKING SUPER WELL. WE DON'T EVEN NEED THE AVERAGE VIEWER OF THIS TO LOOK AT STATISTICS. THEY CAN JUST LOOK AT IT FOR A MOMENT. YEA, YOU KNOW, TOTALLY MAKES SENSE. WE CAN SEE ALL THE TIME WASHINGTON, D.C. IS THRIVING. THERE'S MORE COMMERCIALS. IT SEEMS EVERYBODY HAS MORE POWERFUL AND MORE MONEY AND MORE, MORE, MORE. BUT, II, THE CUSTOMER, THE VOTER, ARE SUPER DISSATISFIED. HOW IS THAT RIGHT? AND SO, BY AGAIN, LOOKING AT IT AS AN INDUSTRY, WE EXPLAIN WHAT'S GONE WRONG. BUT THE PURPOSE FOR THAT EXPLANATION IS SOLELY TO FIGURE OUT WHERE IN THAT DYSFUNCTIONAL DESIGN COULD WE INTERVENE TO CHANGE THE DYNAMICS SO THAT THE PUBLIC INTEREST BECOMES THE MOST IMPORTANT CUSTOMER? AND THAT'S WHAT WE ASK OURSELVES. WE ANALYZE, WE DIAGNOSE, AND WE ESSENTIALLY PRESCRIBED BECAUSE WE CAN NOW IDENTIFY THE MOST POWERFUL CHANGES WE COULD MAKE. ...

#Trump plans to steal the 2020 #Election - Newsweek Editorial

How to Defeat Trump's Plan to Overturn the Election | Opinion TIMOTHY E. WIRTH AND TOM ROGERS , EDITOR-AT-LARGE FOR NEWSWEEK ON 8/20/20

Since we wrote the piece "How Donald Trump Could Lose the Election and Still Remain President," it has become even more apparent that Donald Trump will attempt to create massive chaos and uncertainty following the November election, even if it is abundantly clear he has lost it. His repeated false statements about mail-in ballots creating election fraud and his efforts to slow U.S. Postal Service operations to impact the election results, as well as his unwillingness to state that he will accept the outcome of the election, make it all too clear that his deep decline in the polls only strengthens his resolve to question the integrity of the election. Trump's recent call to move the date of the election is further indication that he plans to drive a narrative that a fair election cannot be run and he must take extraordinary measures as a result.

Unexecutive Orders by Trump - - Attacks Social Security and Medicare

Sidestepping Congress,
Trump Signs Executive
 Measures for Pandemic Relief
 ... NYTimes

President Trump took executive action on Saturday to circumvent Congress and try to extend an array of federal pandemic relief, resorting to a legally dubious set of edicts whose impact was unclear, as negotiations over an economic recovery package appeared on the brink of collapse.

It was not clear what authority Mr. Trump had to act on his own on the measures or what immediate effect, if any, they would have, given that Congress controls federal spending. But his decision to sign the measures — billed as a federal eviction ban, a payroll tax suspension, and relief for student borrowers and $400 a week for the unemployed — reflected the failure of two weeks of talks between White House officials and top congressional Democrats to strike a deal on a broad relief plan as crucial benefits have expired with no resolution in sight.

GOP Waterboards the American Public; the 99%.

Weekend of July 24th, 2020

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Saturday that Republicans were set to roll out the next COVID-19 aid package Monday and assured there was backing from the White House after he and President Donald Trump's top aide met to salvage the $1 trillion proposal that had floundered just days before.

This is all about running out the clock and then blaming the democrats.  It won't work even though the GOP will use the tactic "if we starve you" then you will agree to our terms.

Waterboarding is also known as "supply side economics" or "top-down economics" or the "Laffer curve".   Too bad it is not funny.  A previous trillion dollar tax cut for the wealthy will boost the stock market with stock buybacks but not develop the economy.

The wealthy just can't spend their surplus fast enough. A middle class family has to spend their money on real goods; a poor family even more so.

Steven Mnuchin is doing everything, a dull, inept wealthy person can to make sure Trump only gets a one term Presidency.  Watch the polls spread even wider.

Can Trump be impeached in December and the impeachment not sent to the Senate until after January 21, 2021?  Have the House recertify the impeachment in the new term and then send it to the new Democratic Senate.

We already know Trump will recertify himself for a second by declaring voting chaos.

Floridians flattened the COVID curve. Then, amid upbeat talk, the numbers began to rise

The Florida COVID-19 data said one thing while Gov. DeSantis sometimes said another

Reluctantly, under pressure, Florida disclosed COVID-19 data. What the numbers tell us

‘Leading indicators of a resurgence’: COVID-19 numbers trending up since reopening

... In mid-April, Gov. Ron DeSantis started talking about reopening Florida, saying the worst of the novel coronavirus pandemic was behind the state. Reported new COVID-19 cases had steadily declined that month.
“People were literally just frightened to the dickens,” DeSantis said on April 20, criticizing the news media and public health experts for in his view exaggerating the crisis.
At the time, the numbers had been trending downward. But by the time reopening began, the state no longer appeared to be meeting federal reopening guidelines for declines in new cases or positivity rates, although the numbers had not returned to peak level, a Miami Herald data analysis shows. (The Herald was able to perform an independent analysis of positivity because it exclusively obtained non-public state data. Read the methodology for our analysis.)
Alberto Moscoso, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Health, did not challenge the Herald’s finding but defended the governor’s approach without providing the state’s own analysis. “The Governor’s first priority in reopening Florida continues to be maintaining the health and safety of all residents,” he said.
