Teaparty, Farm Bill, Dairy & Cheese Implications

1/13/2014 ... still a "in this season" a political football

6/21/13 - Deja vu with failure of House to pass "Farm Bill"--- almost 6 months ago ... and still nothing really done except that GOP wants to starve more people/kids (SNAP) while handing out large subsidies to "large corporate" farms!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reprieve and extended uncertainty?!  Agricultural Committees Agree To Farm Bill Extension by The Associated Press December 30, 2012 5:08 PM
Where is Governor Walker's voice let alone his head.  Let's have some leadership given all that national clout he supposedly has.  Does he really care about the "rural/rich" minority coalition that elected him?  Maybe the latter but not the former (the ruralies)?
The buzz about the Farm Bill lapsing seems to suggest that dairy prices for milk and cheese could sky rocket.  Explore the things that may follow!
  • Dairy Farmers experience early windfall dollars.
  • Demand for dairy products collapses.
  • As market deals with disruption and a new equilibrium is established Dairy Farmers can no longer sell product.
  • Dairy Farmers go out of business.
  • Glut in land/farms for sale.
  • Loss in property tax revenue locally.
  • Rural schools and local government contract even more
  • Developers scoop up prime lands.
  • Corporate farming gets additional leverage due to scale (love those Happy Cows from CA - just like having your Driver's License made there).
  • Manufacturing relative to Dairy Farms collapses - two pressures (glut of used equipment, less new demand).
  • More ... like dominoes
In essence a market and way of life is altered and/or destroyed and will never be back.  Agricultural policy may need to change but doing it abruptly will be disastrous.  Wisconsin with its smaller dairy herds will never be the same.
The GOP Social Security Medicare Plan - Political Suicide
As I read the article below I realized that the GOP social policies would eventually self-correct and even faster than first thought.
Social Security, Medicare more than numbers
...Social Security and Medicare enable millions of older Americans to survive financially each month, after years of working hard and paying taxes to earn these protections. Last year, 478,397 Oklahomans 65 and older received Social Security and 485,351 were enrolled in Medicare....
... As lawmakers consider the U.S. budget, here are a couple numbers they should keep in mind: Half of America's seniors get by on less than $20,000 a year. And here's another: Typical seniors already spend nearly 20 percent of their incomes on health care, a percentage that continues to rise.
I may be guilty of relying on an impression of what has been said rather than going back and finding a reference for each impression I ask you just go forward (and verify later, just pretend it is cable news) -
  • Red states by population derive more social benefits from Federal programs than Blue states?
  • The only major group that Romney clearly carried was white males, especially "old ones"?
  • By cutting social benefits older white males will die off even faster since they will be forced to chose between eating and healthcare? [e.g., Chained Cost of Living Adjustment]
  • The majority of Tea Party members and politicians come from Red states where the 2010  Census was used to give them secure seats?
Effects:
  • The Tea Party and/or GOP is reducing its only significant voting block nationally and especially in Red states by cutting social benefits.
  • Blue states will become more blue.
  • Secure "Tea Party" districts will become less secure and surviving spouses may become even more resentful and resolved to change the situation.
  • By killing off seniors faster Medicare and Social Security may become even more solvent than it currently is.
Do you think anyone thinks this way ?   If it happens it is sad.
Obama vs Boehner and Military Cuts vs Humanity
Why does in this ongoing "noise" the discussion seem to be for resolving the "problem" by casting a tradeoff off between killing seniors off quicker and reducing Medicare versus raising taxes on the "high income" (which does not mean the "wealthy").
Would not a much broader discussion make more sense.  Reduce our military expenditures on weapons development (that the military does not want but congress(wo)men do), foreign interventions and other adventures to "subsidize" our corporate influence abroad. These would solve many problems and reflect a country that really cares about not just our citizens and children but people everywhere.
GAB vs FitzWalkerSTAN rig elections Fitzgerald, Walker
Rachael Maddow (MSNBC) held up Wisconsin tonight (12/12/12) as having the best system (GAB - Government Accountability Board) in the nation for running and monitoring elections.
Why would Fitzgerald and Walker want to change it?? DUH!!!
I guess there were about 300,000 more Democrat than Republican votes in 2012 Presidential election (in WI).  Yet we have a "Republican Legislature" - it seems Walker and friends have already perfected "gerrymandering" following the 2010 U.S. Census!
Why would Walker be willing to allocate electoral college electors differently?
DUH! again!!!
Entitlement Reform == Cut SafetyNet, Cut Jobs, Stall Recovery, Recession
Fast Forward 2017:
Trump proposes 20% tax on Mexican imports to pay for "his wall".
If this actually gets done a lot of pain will be experienced in the U.S. - cars, other goods and especially "food/produce" will cost a lot more.
_______________________________
From 2012:
We cannot let the GOP define the language of this "fiscal cliff" debate.  The debate is about jobs and economic recovery and a safety net for all of us when the 1% screw things up and try to make us pay for their mistakes.  Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, et al,  just want to protect the 1%.  The people who raid pension funds (like Romney and BAIN Capital) do not care about other peoples jobs.  There are dozen of ways to protect and enhance Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and create jobs.
One could remove the upper income limit on SS (FICA) withholding.  Oh! You didn't know FICA was capped for some aspects.
One could could treat all income the same no matter the source (i.e., treat capital gains like wages, already done to IRAs, 401Ks for the not so wealthy).
One could make FICA withholding progressive, ability to pay.  Those with really very little discretionary (meaning you can barely get along) income pay less.
President Obama is promoting efficiency in our healthcare system.  We all pay too much for pharmaceuticals.  Why does the GOP block Veterans Administration style purchasing power.  These industries/businesses are subsidized by Federal research projects (National Institute of Health) and then make huge markups on drugs they never could have discovered if it were not for projects like the "Human Genome".
One could cut military interventions and subsidies to out-sourcing quasi-military contractors.
Wisconsin Citizens Media Cooperative
From their story ... McCarthyism Is Alive and Well at Wisconsin Capitol He’s making a list and checking it twice, gonna find out who’s naughty or nice….
The Holidays are here, and Capitol police officers are invoking the spirit of Senator Joe McCarthy by compiling a list of regular attendees of the Solidarity Sing Along, the weekday noon hour singing protest at the Wisconsin Capitol. Police appear to be checking names off on a spreadsheet that lists certain regular visitors to the Capitol, many of whom have received citations during the Capitol Crackdown that began after the arrival of new Capitol Police Chief David Erwin last summer.
A-F of the alphabetized list of citizens that regularly attend the Solidarity SingAlong
“McCarthyism” is the term that describes the hunt for Communists in the United States in the 1950s, and it appears to be alive and well in Wisconsin several decades later, as citizens who sing at the Capitol over the noon hour are targeted, identified, watched and documented.
TechCrunch : Why Pundits And Politicians Hate #NYT Election Forecaster Nate Silver ( #538 )
Why Pundits And Politicians Hate NYT Election Forecaster Nate Silver
It comes down to arithmetic (a confusing sub-element of mathematics?)!
From the article -
The New York Times election oracle, Nate Silver, who in his fivethirtyeight blog correctly predicted 49 of 50 states in the last election, predicts that Obama could breeze to victory with a 75 percent chance of winning. Despite his relatively simple method of averaging polls to predict winners, he’s become a punching bag for pundits and politicians who label him a fradulent snakeoil salesman. ....
And an example of rants ...
“Both sides understand that it is close, and it could go either way. And anybody that thinks that this race is anything but a tossup right now is such an ideologue, they should be kept away from typewriters, computers, laptops and microphones for the next 10 days, because they’re jokes,” said MSNBC’s hotheaded morning political pundit, Joe Scarborough, in a pointed rant against the humble New York Times statistician.
 But the part I like most is a quoted tweet ...
"Education is the only reason I'm standing on this stage."
A friend of mind and I had the great opportunity to cover President Obama's visit to Madison, October 4th, 2012 thanks to WORT 89.9 FM, our local community radio station.  We collected interviews the day before and on the morning of the event and after the event.  We discussed how we would deal with the amount of coverage we had but the necessity to produce something quickly.  Quickly is defined as the 12 hours after the event concluded.
We decided to try and encapsulate the excitement of the event that so many people were feeling.  We also had interviews that present the interest and a gamut of points of view.  There was simply no way to put it altogether in the 12 hours.
So we hope you will wait a little bit longer and look at a more complete version that includes the points of view we tried to uncover and more of the event itself.  We made one mistake in titling due the lateness of the hour, see if you notice.
#NoFingerPrints #Walker Sins of Omission - Use DOA as Money Launderer??
The date of the letter is May 17th, 2012 ... dumb, stupid, corrupt or coverup????  Make up their own the rules??  Above the law??  The letter is only the latest evidence which goes back one year.  Think earlier knowledge might have affected the recall?
Is it not so very interesting that the politicians who talk about efficiency and competition fail to manage or run a government legitimately.  They would be out of business in no time.  Let's hope!
Feds’ letter to DOA suspends block grant program, says WEDC not state agency
Badger Democracy has obtained a letter from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development Milwaukee Office (HUD) dated May 17, 2012 to Department of Administration (DOA) Secretary Mike Huebsch. HUD was not just critical of DOA/State oversight of the new Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC); the federal agency suspended the critical Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
The agency went so far as to state that WEDC is not an “…instrumentality of the state.” The full letter can be found at this link: HUD Letter to WEDC
While local press have given the letter some attention, the broader implications of this communication have been largely ignored. The HUD review of the WEDC  ”Administrative Agreement” executed by DOA exposes a negligence in the statutory authorization of WEDC  to act as a state agency. It also underscores growing concern over lack of accountability and oversight of WEDC.
DOA has been aware for this issue for over one year.
Think Politics - TED - Kahneman - Riddle: Experience vs Memory
If you are going to change minds you need to know how people think, especially yourself, and seriously how you are thinking.
I look at this wondering "why people act against their own interest", especially in this very partisan political time.   Another related post ...
Kahneman believes most of us do not understand the first thing about "how we think".   See link at end ...
#TED : Dan #Ariely - Our buggy moral code - explains #ENRON, #Politics
"Very difficult to think straight about well-being."
"Memory self is a story teller" vs "experience self"
 From his TED bio -
Daniel Kahneman is an eminence grise for the Freakonomics crowd. In the mid-1970s, with his collaborator Amos Tversky, he was among the first academics to pick apart exactly why we make "wrong" decisions. In their 1979 paper on prospect theory, Kahneman and Tversky examined a simple problem of economic risk. And rather than stating the optimal, rational answer, as an economist of the time might have, they quantified how most real people, consistently, make a less-rational choice. Their work treated economics not as a perfect or self-correcting machine, but as a system prey to quirks of human perception. The field of behavioral economics was born.
Daniel Kahneman on "Thinking, Fast and Slow" - To The Best of OurKnowledge 10/14/12 WPR NPR
...But Thaler didn’t contend that humans were randomly irrational. More importantly, he observed that people are predictably irrational (to borrow a term from the economist Dan Ariely). Some of Thaler’s most interesting work studied the predictably irrational effects of ownership, confidence, and a sense of fairness. ...
The Making of Richard Thaler’s Economics Nobel By John Cassidy October 10, 2017 New Yorker
... Thaler and Kahneman met in 1977, at Stanford University. Thaler, who had obtained his Ph.D. in 1974, was still finding his way as a researcher, while Kahneman and his fellow-psychologist Amos Tversky had already identified many of the systematic biases that they would become famous for. These included anchoring (the tendency to rely too heavily on initial information); confirmation bias (the tendency to interpret evidence as supporting preëxisting beliefs); and loss aversion (feeling the pain of losing ten dollars more intensely than the joy of winning ten dollars). “We spent a lot of time walking the hills discussing things,” Kahneman recalled of Thaler. “He already knew a lot of things that didn’t fit in the orthodox economic framework. What he got from us was the theoretical framework to fit them into.” ...
#Obama vs #Romney - #NPR 'Children Succeed' With Character, Not Test Scores
How did these two grow up?  What kind of parenting did they experience?  What kind of challenges did they face?  Does that translate into anything we should care about?
If it seems strange to you, it seems strange to me as well, to be listening to this story on NPR and then reflecting on what I know (or don't know) about these two men. What does "success" or "succeed" mean?
I wish I could embed this story but all I can do is provide part of the transcript and a link -
A child's success can't be measured in IQ scores, standardized tests or vocabulary quizzes, says author Paul Tough. Success, he argues, is about how young people build character. Tough explores this idea in his new book, How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character.
"For some people, [the] path to college is so easy that they can get out into life and they've never really been challenged," he tells NPR's David Greene. "I think they get into their 20s and 30s and they really feel lost — they feel like they never had those character-building experiences as adolescents, as kids, that really make a difference when they get to adulthood."
Calling the persistently high rate of unemployment a “grave concern,” language that several experts described as unusually strong, Mr. Bernanke made clear that a recent run of tepid rather than terrible economic data had not altered the Fed’s will to act, because the pace of growth remained too slow to reduce the number of people who lack jobs.
FDR vs Paul Ryan, #1938 all over again
.... Although I am not a scholar on the history of the Great Depression, it has been described to me by my family and I have read about it ... which makes me as qualified as most of the people pontificating about the situation we find ourselves in today.  People like to disparage the economist Keynes these days ... all he said was that there was a little simple algebra that roughly describes the interactions of interest rates, employment, income and consumption!  Trust me ... it is still true!  You have a big crash, a reduction in income, a shrinkage of asset values and you are going to have a recession / depression!  What would you do ... Mr. President ... well Keynes would tell you to supplant the loss in consumption with Federal spending to boost / maintain employment or reduce low / middle income taxes or both ... but not if you are a conservative Republican!  In the latter case you focus on finding an anti-FDR solution ... contract spending, raise interest rates and increase unemployment. ... Upd: #Romney 's #Religion ?
Does not matter to me.  I only wonder why a friend of mine meeting a couple of  RNC  / GOP ladies today - they just had to tell her Obama was Muslim so Romney was ok as the GOP Presidential nominee.
So what's going on ... it seems to me bigotry is bigotry ... racism is racism ... and religious discrimination is forbidden by the Constitution via separation of church and state.
It's NOT ok if you are a Muslim (even if you are not) to be President (implied).  But it is ok if you are a Mormon to be President.  I'm no expert - just confused?
This quote is from The Nation in a great article "Roger Williams, America's First Rebel" by John M. Barry ...
I fear it takes a subscription to see the whole thing ... I'll provide the link anyway ...
Roger Williams, America's First Rebel John M. Barry May 2, 2012 | This article appeared in the May 21, 2012 edition of The Nation.
One quote is provided so relevant to the just concluded RNC ...
...They are right about one thing: the history of the idea of separating church and state is crucial to understanding the First Amendment. For that amendment did not come from mere intellectual exercise; it emerged in response to historic events. That history also demonstrates that it was no accident that the freedoms of religion, of speech, of the press, of assembly and of expressing grievances against the government were linked in the same amendment. Together they represent the essentials of liberty—the right to think as one chooses and to express that thought.
When Democracy Now! senior producer Mike Burke attempted to interview billionaire casino magnate and Republican donor Sheldon Adelson inside the Republican National Convention, a woman identified as Adelson's daughter grabbed our video camera, tried to take it into a private suite and then threw the camera to the ground. While Adelson's daughter first accused our Burke of hitting her, she later came out of the suite to apologize. The incident was caught on tape, shortly after Burke questioned another billionaire GOP donor, David Koch, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele. Burke files a report and joins us to describe what happened.
Their report ...
Democrats and Republicans are fighting over the women's vote, but they are doing it in very different ways. Outside of the 2012 Republican National Convention pro-choice continues to be a hot topic. For example, there was at least one Code Pink protester dressed as a giant pink vagina. We were also getting emails from Wisconsin Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan warning about Republicans' anti-abortion stance.
Inside the 2012 Republican National Convention, however, 89.9 WORT FM reporters Kate Golden and Cristalyne Bell found that most Republican women didn't want to talk about abortion.
Weeks before Republican Paul Ryan was selected to run for vice president, Sister Simone Campbell — who heads NETWORK, a Catholic policy and lobbying group — hit the road to protest the so-called “Ryan budget” recently passed by the House of Representatives. She and some of her sister nuns rolled across the heartland on a bus trip designed to arouse public concern over what the Ryan plan would mean for social services in America, especially its slashing of programs for the poor. Sister Simone says his budget is inconsistent with Catholic social teaching. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops agrees.
The other Paul Ryan ... who is he really?
Start listening at about 1 minute in to see what Paul Ryan has to say!  Even so you may be right !
... and from Wikipedia ...
Ryan has a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio,[30] where he became interested in the writings of Friedrich HayekLudwig von Mises, and Milton Friedman.[21] He often visited the office of libertarian professor Richard Hart to discuss the theories of these economists and of Ayn Rand.[21][31] Hart introduced Ryan to National Review,[21] and with Hart's recommendation Ryan began an internship in the D.C. office of Wisconsin U.S. Senator Bob Kasten where he worked with Kasten's foreign affairs adviser.[21][32]
Who's the #Patriot ? #TammyBaldwin or Tommy - God Bless #America
I was looking this up on YouTube for my wife who loves this performance by Martina McBride.  This version is from the 2002 Rose Bowl.  On Sundays during the 7th inning stretch this or perhaps another version is played at the Brewer games in Milwaukee.
After listening several times and noticing that there were political ads pro and con for Tammy and Tommy I decided to share ... so it gives you a different kind of perspective.  It's been viewed over 1,300,000 times ...
I personally am a lot more comfortable with Tammy's record in public service than Tommy's. As I recall Tommy was in charge of getting the RNC Platform passed the year that George Bush became President. He is also given credit for introducing Pay-To-Play politics in Wisconsin and an early pusher of "ALEC" legislation.
High-profile Republicans from U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Terrace Park to Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee to longtime TV star Art Linkletter held forth for nearly eight hours Monday, testifying before an RNC platform committee panel headed by Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson on GOP plans to fix Social Security, improve Medicare and return control of children's education to parents. Advocates and opponents of abortion rights were left to protest on the outside of the school auditorium....
For 20 years, GOP presidential candidates have run on a party platform with a strong anti-abortion plank, one that calls for a constitutional amendment banning abortion and makes no exceptions in its opposition to abortion in cases of rape, incest and the health of the mother. (emphasis added)
Writing Democracy
Writing Democracy
08.19.2012 (was 11.13.2011)
Some people put their bodies on the line for democracy.  Some pick up weapons.  And some put pen to paper.   Writers who use their gifts to speak truth to power have a special place in the annals of literature.  We revere them for their conscience and their courage.  We'll talk with some of the world’s most celebrated writers talk with us about the literature of democracy. Including and interview with the poet in blue jeans, the dissident playwright who inspired the Velvet Revolution that overthrew the Soviet Union. Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic, may have recently passed away, but his ideas live on.
