Upd: #Romney 's #Religion ?

Does not matter to me.  I only wonder why a friend of mine meeting a couple of  RNC  / GOP ladies today - they just had to tell her Obama was Muslim so Romney was ok as the GOP Presidential nominee.

So what's going on ... it seems to me bigotry is bigotry ... racism is racism ... and religious discrimination is forbidden by the Constitution via separation of church and state.

It's NOT ok if you are a Muslim (even if you are not) to be President (implied).  But it is ok if you are a Mormon to be President.  I'm no expert - just confused?

This quote is from The Nation in a great article "Roger Williams, America's First Rebel" by John M. Barry ...

I fear it takes a subscription to see the whole thing ... I'll provide the link anyway ...

Roger Williams, America's First Rebel John M. Barry May 2, 2012 | This article appeared in the May 21, 2012 edition of The Nation.

One quote is provided so relevant to the just concluded RNC ...

...They are right about one thing: the history of the idea of separating church and state is crucial to understanding the First Amendment. For that amendment did not come from mere intellectual exercise; it emerged in response to historic events. That history also demonstrates that it was no accident that the freedoms of religion, of speech, of the press, of assembly and of expressing grievances against the government were linked in the same amendment. Together they represent the essentials of liberty—the right to think as one chooses and to express that thought.

When Democracy Now! senior producer Mike Burke attempted to interview billionaire casino magnate and Republican donor Sheldon Adelson inside the Republican National Convention, a woman identified as Adelson's daughter grabbed our video camera, tried to take it into a private suite and then threw the camera to the ground. While Adelson's daughter first accused our Burke of hitting her, she later came out of the suite to apologize. The incident was caught on tape, shortly after Burke questioned another billionaire GOP donor, David Koch, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele. Burke files a report and joins us to describe what happened.

Their report ...
Democrats and Republicans are fighting over the women's vote, but they are doing it in very different ways. Outside of the 2012 Republican National Convention pro-choice continues to be a hot topic. For example, there was at least one Code Pink protester dressed as a giant pink vagina. We were also getting emails from Wisconsin Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan warning about Republicans' anti-abortion stance.

Inside the 2012 Republican National Convention, however, 89.9 WORT FM reporters Kate Golden and Cristalyne Bell found that most Republican women didn't want to talk about abortion.

Weeks before Republican Paul Ryan was selected to run for vice president, Sister Simone Campbell — who heads NETWORK, a Catholic policy and lobbying group — hit the road to protest the so-called “Ryan budget” recently passed by the House of Representatives. She and some of her sister nuns rolled across the heartland on a bus trip designed to arouse public concern over what the Ryan plan would mean for social services in America, especially its slashing of programs for the poor. Sister Simone says his budget is inconsistent with Catholic social teaching. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops agrees.

The other Paul Ryan ... who is he really?

Start listening at about 1 minute in to see what Paul Ryan has to say!  Even so you may be right !
... and from Wikipedia ...

Ryan has a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio,[30] where he became interested in the writings of Friedrich HayekLudwig von Mises, and Milton Friedman.[21] He often visited the office of libertarian professor Richard Hart to discuss the theories of these economists and of Ayn Rand.[21][31] Hart introduced Ryan to National Review,[21] and with Hart's recommendation Ryan began an internship in the D.C. office of Wisconsin U.S. Senator Bob Kasten where he worked with Kasten's foreign affairs adviser.[21][32]

Who's the #Patriot ? #TammyBaldwin or Tommy - God Bless #America

I was looking this up on YouTube for my wife who loves this performance by Martina McBride.  This version is from the 2002 Rose Bowl.  On Sundays during the 7th inning stretch this or perhaps another version is played at the Brewer games in Milwaukee.

After listening several times and noticing that there were political ads pro and con for Tammy and Tommy I decided to share ... so it gives you a different kind of perspective.  It's been viewed over 1,300,000 times ...

I personally am a lot more comfortable with Tammy's record in public service than Tommy's. As I recall Tommy was in charge of getting the RNC Platform passed the year that George Bush became President. He is also given credit for introducing Pay-To-Play politics in Wisconsin and an early pusher of "ALEC" legislation.

6/20/2000
High-profile Republicans from U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Terrace Park to Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee to longtime TV star Art Linkletter held forth for nearly eight hours Monday, testifying before an RNC platform committee panel headed by Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson on GOP plans to fix Social Security, improve Medicare and return control of children's education to parents. Advocates and opponents of abortion rights were left to protest on the outside of the school auditorium....
For 20 years, GOP presidential candidates have run on a party platform with a strong anti-abortion plank, one that calls for a constitutional amendment banning abortion and makes no exceptions in its opposition to abortion in cases of rape, incest and the health of the mother. (emphasis added)

Some people put their bodies on the line for democracy.  Some pick up weapons.  And some put pen to paper.   Writers who use their gifts to speak truth to power have a special place in the annals of literature.  We revere them for their conscience and their courage.  We'll talk with some of the world’s most celebrated writers talk with us about the literature of democracy. Including and interview with the poet in blue jeans, the dissident playwright who inspired the Velvet Revolution that overthrew the Soviet Union. Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic, may have recently passed away, but his ideas live on.

#Madison Capitol Crackdown Juxtaposition -> #Putin #Russia

Inklings of a Crackdown in the Madison Capitol ... The Progressive 8/13/2012

On Saturday Steve Books, a long-time Veterans For Peace activist, was arrested and taken away in handcuffs for chalking, "This is far, far, far from over," on the sidewalk next to the Capitol. He was fined $205.05 and issued a citation for “conduct otherwise prohibited” under Wisconsin Administrative Code 2.14.
The arrest comes shortly after David Erwin was named the new chief of the Capitol Police. Erwin had been serving as Scott Walker’s personal bodyguard in the state’s Dignitary Protection Unit. A former Marine Drill Sergeant and commander of the State Patrol Air Support Unit, Erwin’s style of leadership is proving to be much different than that of the former chief, Charles Tubbs, who was known for his community policing techniques.

ALEC Exposed: Starving Public Schools

Ohanian Comment: Entities such as The Nation have lots of expenses. The article I'm posting below happens to be "for subscribers only." So think about that as you read it, please, and think about supporting The Nation by subscribing. We don't have many "progressives" left, and even though they don't always qualify, they're about as close as we can get.

Also Note: This article is part of a Nation series exposing the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), in collaboration with the Center For Media and Democracy. John Nichols introduces the series.

Third Note: ALEC stands for American Legislative Exchange Council. Put "American Legislative" into a search on this site. I've been following them for years.

Julie Underwood, JD, PhD, is dean of the School of Education and a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was previously the general counsel of the National School Boards Association. The opinions are her own and do not necessarily reflect those of the University of Wisconsin.

by Julie Underwood

... The first large-scale voucher program, the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program, was enacted in 1990 following the rubric ALEC provided in 1985. It was championed by then-Governor Tommy Thompson, an early ALEC member, who once said he “loved” ALEC meetings, "because I always found new ideas, and then I'd take them back to Wisconsin, disguise them a little bit, and declare [they were] mine."

Chemical widely used in antibacterial hand soaps may impair muscle function

Triclosan, an antibacterial chemical widely used in hand soaps and other personal-care products, hinders muscle contractions at a cellular level, slows swimming in fish and reduces muscular strength in mice, according to researchers at the University of California, Davis, and the University of Colorado. The findings appear online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
“Triclosan is found in virtually everyone’s home and is pervasive in the environment,” said Isaac Pessah, professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biosciences in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and principal investigator of the study. “These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health.”
Triclosan is commonly found in antibacterial personal-care products such as hand soaps as well as deodorants, mouthwashes, toothpaste, bedding, clothes, carpets, toys and trash bags. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1998 estimated that more than 1 million pounds of triclosan are produced annually in the United States, and that the chemical is detectable in waterways and aquatic organisms ranging from algae to fish to dolphins, as well as in human urine, blood and breast milk.

Pence’s Stay at Trump Resort in Ireland and Trump’s G7 Plans Draw Democrats’ Scrutiny

NYTimes 2019.09.06  ... This one is about Ireland ... emoluments!

House Democrats, furious over President Trump’s continued promotion of his branded properties for government business, said on Friday that they would scrutinize whether two recent cases would violate the Constitution’s ban on presidents profiting from domestic or foreign governments.

Two chairmen acting in tandem sent letters to the White House, the Secret Service and the Trump Organization asking for documents and communications related to Vice President Mike Pence’s decision to stay this week at Mr. Trump’s resort in Ireland during an official visit, as well as Mr. Trump’s recent statements promoting Trump National Doral, near Miami, as a possible site for the Group of 7 summit of world leaders next year.

In both cases, the Democrats argued, Mr. Trump stands to benefit financially from American taxpayer dollars, and in the case of the potential summit in Doral, from foreign funds as well. The Constitution’s emoluments clauses prohibit presidents from accepting any payment from federal, state or foreign governments beyond their official salary.

“The committee does not believe that U.S. taxpayer funds should be used to personally enrich President Trump, his family, and his companies,” wrote Representative Elijah E. Cummings, Democrat of Maryland and the chairman of the Oversight and Reform Committee. The cases in question, he added, could be a conflict of interest.

#PBS #Moyers - Keesha Gaskins and Michael Waldman on Suppressing Votes By Law

From the intro -
This week, Bill talks to Keesha Gaskins and Michael Waldman of the Brennan Center for Justice about new voter ID and other election laws that keep the young, elderly, minorities and the poor from exercising one of the most fundamental American rights.
“When these votes come under attack by this level of partisan gamesmanship, it’s completely inappropriate and antithetical to our history,” Gaskins tells Bill. “This is a very real political issue, but beyond that, this is a real issue of real Americans being able to access and be self-determinative in how we’re governed.”

We need voices ... helping out makes your voice that much stronger!  Starting up this weekend.  Although I do not know anyone personally involved,  I do know some people from Wisconsin who are going to help them out as they get on the air this weekend!  From the intro material -

FB KHOI

KHOI FM Web
Ames, Iowa and the surrounding villages and farms are rich with talent in many areas: academics, arts, music, business, and working the land. We want to give voice to all of these. We are building community radio for a good future. There are differing points of view in Central Iowa.  In these times, expression of these differences can be intense but we want to hear what our neighbors have to say.  Only then can we hope to understand and appreciate the challenges they face and the talents they possess.
With a world-class, land-grant university located in Ames, Iowa, people from all over the world come to Ames to teach, work at and attend Iowa State University.  Conversely, people from Ames travel out into the world, gathering interesting experiences wherever they go. We want to connect with you by calling you and putting you on our airwaves and have you hear us online.
