#NoFingerPrints #Walker Sins of Omission - Use DOA as Money Launderer??

The date of the letter is May 17th, 2012 ... dumb, stupid, corrupt or coverup????  Make up their own the rules??  Above the law??  The letter is only the latest evidence which goes back one year.  Think earlier knowledge might have affected the recall?

Is it not so very interesting that the politicians who talk about efficiency and competition fail to manage or run a government legitimately.  They would be out of business in no time.  Let's hope!

Feds’ letter to DOA suspends block grant program, says WEDC not state agency
Badger Democracy has obtained a letter from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development Milwaukee Office (HUD) dated May 17, 2012 to Department of Administration (DOA) Secretary Mike Huebsch. HUD was not just critical of DOA/State oversight of the new Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC); the federal agency suspended the critical Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
The agency went so far as to state that WEDC is not an “…instrumentality of the state.” The full letter can be found at this link: HUD Letter to WEDC
While local press have given the letter some attention, the broader implications of this communication have been largely ignored. The HUD review of the WEDC  ”Administrative Agreement” executed by DOA exposes a negligence in the statutory authorization of WEDC  to act as a state agency. It also underscores growing concern over lack of accountability and oversight of WEDC.
DOA has been aware for this issue for over one year.

The Einhorns have made campaign donations to many Republican politicians, including Gov. Scott Walker, to whom they have given $49,750 since 2005, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

Sen. Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) and other legislators were reacting to a Journal Sentinel report on Sunday that financier Stephen Einhorn and his wife donated $25,000 to Gov. Scott Walker a month before Einhorn's Milwaukee firm won a contract to manage $1 million of taxpayer money, potentially triggering federal "pay-to-play" conflict of interest rules. Think Politics - TED - Kahneman - Riddle: Experience vs Memory

If you are going to change minds you need to know how people think, especially yourself, and seriously how you are thinking.

I look at this wondering "why people act against their own interest", especially in this very partisan political time.   Another related post ...

Kahneman believes most of us do not understand the first thing about "how we think".   See link at end ...

#TED : Dan #Ariely - Our buggy moral code - explains #ENRON, #Politics

"Very difficult to think straight about well-being."
"Memory self is a story teller" vs "experience self"
 From his TED bio -
Daniel Kahneman is an eminence grise for the Freakonomics crowd. In the mid-1970s, with his collaborator Amos Tversky, he was among the first academics to pick apart exactly why we make "wrong" decisions. In their 1979 paper on prospect theory, Kahneman and Tversky examined a simple problem of economic risk. And rather than stating the optimal, rational answer, as an economist of the time might have, they quantified how most real people, consistently, make a less-rational choice. Their work treated economics not as a perfect or self-correcting machine, but as a system prey to quirks of human perception. The field of behavioral economics was born.

Daniel Kahneman on "Thinking, Fast and Slow" - To The Best of OurKnowledge 10/14/12 WPR NPR

...But Thaler didn’t contend that humans were randomly irrational. More importantly, he observed that people are predictably irrational (to borrow a term from the economist Dan Ariely). Some of Thaler’s most interesting work studied the predictably irrational effects of ownership, confidence, and a sense of fairness. ...
The Making of Richard Thaler’s Economics Nobel By John Cassidy October 10, 2017 New Yorker
... Thaler and Kahneman met in 1977, at Stanford University. Thaler, who had obtained his Ph.D. in 1974, was still finding his way as a researcher, while Kahneman and his fellow-psychologist Amos Tversky had already identified many of the systematic biases that they would become famous for. These included anchoring (the tendency to rely too heavily on initial information); confirmation bias (the tendency to interpret evidence as supporting preëxisting beliefs); and loss aversion (feeling the pain of losing ten dollars more intensely than the joy of winning ten dollars). “We spent a lot of time walking the hills discussing things,” Kahneman recalled of Thaler. “He already knew a lot of things that didn’t fit in the orthodox economic framework. What he got from us was the theoretical framework to fit them into.” ...
and the "endowment effect".

The Ryan material uncovered is  not really surprising but should encourage one to be very aware of "words said" now versus "hidden agendas".  I'm accepting the source and research presented as credible.

Walker is Electrifying - but probably boosts insurance premiums

Fortunately ... this Walker idea died ... so far anyway.

Usually codes like this have been proven in the "public interest" so why would Walker violate decades of good government?  "Homeowners Insurance" companies will boost premiums and there will be many avoidable accidents.

Walker administration targets electrical safety codes, citing home builders' concerns

Mandatory requirements designed to detect fire-causing conditions, stop electric shocks and keep children from sticking foreign objects into electrical outlets have been targeted for removal from the state code, according to a governor-approved plan to rewrite the rules to administer the code.

Bill talks with Craig Unger, author of Boss Rove: Inside Karl Rove’s Secret Kingdom of Power, about Rove’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering to once again affect the outcome of a presidential election.

“Most people thought he was a creature of the Bush family,” Unger tells Bill. “I think he’s a force more powerful than that.”

#Obama vs #Romney - #NPR 'Children Succeed' With Character, Not Test Scores

How did these two grow up?  What kind of parenting did they experience?  What kind of challenges did they face?  Does that translate into anything we should care about?

If it seems strange to you, it seems strange to me as well, to be listening to this story on NPR and then reflecting on what I know (or don't know) about these two men. What does "success" or "succeed" mean?

I wish I could embed this story but all I can do is provide part of the transcript and a link -
A child's success can't be measured in IQ scores, standardized tests or vocabulary quizzes, says author Paul Tough. Success, he argues, is about how young people build character. Tough explores this idea in his new book, How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character.
"For some people, [the] path to college is so easy that they can get out into life and they've never really been challenged," he tells NPR's David Greene. "I think they get into their 20s and 30s and they really feel lost — they feel like they never had those character-building experiences as adolescents, as kids, that really make a difference when they get to adulthood."

#Bernanke, #FedChief, makes case for #Independents to #Vote #Obama #NYTimes

Deficit expenditures are generally recouped by the resulting economic expansion (certainly in human terms, when they get jobs).  The GOP, Romney and Ryan when not flip flopping or using double speak have done everything they can, cynically, to block stimulus and economic expansion.

They believe that independent voters are going to be persuaded that keeping your neighbor unemployed or underemployed and denying their children support via healthcare or education will put the nation on a better track

Fed Chairman Makes Case, in Strong Terms, for New Action (New York Times)

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — The Federal Reserve chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, delivered a detailed and forceful argument on Friday for new steps to stimulate the economy, reinforcing earlier indications that the Fed is on the verge of action.

Related

Calling the persistently high rate of unemployment a “grave concern,” language that several experts described as unusually strong, Mr. Bernanke made clear that a recent run of tepid rather than terrible economic data had not altered the Fed’s will to act, because the pace of growth remained too slow to reduce the number of people who lack jobs.

FDR vs Paul Ryan, #1938 all over again

.... Although I am not a scholar on the history of the Great Depression, it has been described to me by my family and I have read about it ... which makes me as qualified as most of the people pontificating about the situation we find ourselves in today.  People like to disparage the economist Keynes these days ... all he said was that there was a little simple algebra that roughly describes the interactions of interest rates, employment, income and consumption!  Trust me ... it is still true!  You have a big crash, a reduction in income, a shrinkage of asset values and you are going to have a recession / depression!  What would you do ... Mr. President ... well Keynes would tell you to supplant the loss in consumption with Federal spending to boost / maintain employment or reduce low / middle income taxes or both ... but not if you are a conservative Republican!  In the latter case you focus on finding an anti-FDR solution ... contract spending, raise interest rates and increase unemployment. ...
